The Scafidi Lab

Joseph and Susanna Scafidi, along with their team of researchers, conduct mechanistic research on how traumatic brain injury affects the developing brain.

The lab is based in Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

What we do

Our research investigates the metabolic and cellular mechanisms that arise in the developing brain, with a specific focus on children who have experienced hypoxia, premature birth and/or pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI).

As clinician-scientists we bring out bedside experience to the bench; our work with these populations directly affects our research process. One major face of our work investigates how the brain adapts to injury, and moreover how applying substrates during the immediate period post-injury can help children recover quicker.
